“Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honor is humility. ” Proverbs 18:12 NKJV

Our society today is keen when it comes to identifying people. More often than not we consider people who dream big dreams and eventually make it to the top as our role models, our “heroes”. We brand them as such because we know that without them, we are always left with mediocrity. We will never be able to realize that there is so much more to life than meets the eye.
It’s good to note that we have many exemplary individuals to look up to, but we must also be wary of how they manage their ambition and furthermore, their success. When ambition is left unchecked, it becomes an insatiable thirst to power and prestige [Max Lucado].
The writer of Proverbs warns us that pride goes before destruction. When we are too proud of how much we have achieved and say in our hearts “I did it my way”, without considering that it was God all along who contributed greatly to our success, He will also eventually drag us down to the pit – to help us reassess ourselves. Believe me, I’ve seen many people who have gone through such a phase. Don’t wait for it to happen to you.
I pray that as we ask God for financial security, for promotions, for good health, may we always put a leash on our pride as we receive these blessings with open arms. Let us always be reminded that it is God who gives, and it is Him who also takes away.
